Hannah Andersen (MFA, BFA, NCPT, FMT) is an Associate Professor of Teaching in the Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance, Wayne State University (Detroit, MI) where her work intersects dance science, dancer wellness, pedagogy, Pilates and technique. She teaches theory and practice courses in the BS/BFA Dance Programs, MA Teaching Artistry Program, and is the Director of the Pilates Mentorship Program supporting theatre and dance students in obtaining Pilates teaching certifications. She is driven by helping others understand how to move well.

Hannah has taught movement across contexts including after-school programs, summer camps, high schools, fitness centers, community colleges, dance companies, universities, yoga studios, and boutique Pilates studios. Before relocating to the Midwest, she served on teaching faculty at Whatcom Community College, University of Oregon, and Western Washington University. Hannah has spent 17 years in the Pilates industry within and outside of higher education, is currently anatomy faculty for a 200 and 300 Yoga Alliance Teacher Training and serves as a Subject Matter Expert for the National Pilates Certification Program. She has received prestigious awards from University of Oregon, National Dance Education Organization, and most recently the 2022 ‘Sue Nine Award for Faculty Excellence’ in the Theatre and Dance Department at Wayne State University. She is an active contributing member of the National Dance Education Organization, and International Association of Dance Medicine and Science and currently serves on the American College Dance Association National Board of Directors and Dance Science and Somatics Educators Organizing Group.

Andersen received the 2018 “Doug Risner Prize for Emerging Dance Researchers” and is published in the Journal of Dance Education, Research in Dance Education, and Journal of Dance and Somatic Practices, as well as co-author of a chapter in the book ‘Masculinity, Intersectionality, and Identity: Why Boys (Don’t)Dance,’ winner of the Ruth Lovell Murray Book Award and WSU Board of Governors Award 2023. She spent three seasons performing and choreographing with Bellingham Repertory Dance (WA, USA), has been spotted performing on stages and in fields in NYC, NC, WA, OR, AK, and more.
